Robert Bell was born 8th October 1950 in Youngstown, Ohio, USA. Charles 'Claydes' Smith was born Jersey City 1948 in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA. Died on 20th June 2006 in Maplewood, New Jersey. Along with Ronald Bell they grew up in New Jersey and went onto to form the Jazziacs, they were to evolve into Kool and the Gang, with Robert being the Kool. Gradually changing their style from Jazz to a more R & B direction they started to score hits in their homeland, but it wasn't until they joined the disco boom that they really went stellar. Throughout the early to mid 80's they were one of the biggest bands on the planet until strangely all but disappearing in the next decade, although still performing. They still hit the charts regularly through the incredible amount of artists who have sampled their work, usually using their 70's back catalogue.
